Reboot

28th March, 2017 and 09:00 AM.

Waiting at the office elevator in the ground floor. The lunch bag in one hand and the cell phone in the other hand….
I have the habit of checking emails in my cell phone as the crappy elevator often gives me nuts to wait for a long time..
Dragged down the messages in the email app to get the latest.. One message caught my attention, the subject says “Site down, Urgent”
Oh..yeah, there are a plethora of such messages with the same subject, as I dragged the email screen down and down and down….incessantly.
All those emails started coming from 06:30 AM today…. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to peep into my emails earlier today due to sleepless night yesterday (don’t ask me why, it is a different story.. 🙂 ) woke up late, had quick makeup for work and just rushed to the office..

Quickly opened the latest message.. It says, ” ….. Mr. M (//my respected boss’s name//) & company have made our site down…”
“F..king shit..”, were the words came out loud from me automatically… The persons standing beside me were giving me strange looks…
I didn’t care a damn, started reading the details into the other similar emails and while reading only rushed into the elevator, as I felt some sense of commotion from the fellow passengers.
Well, those emails were from one of my clients, saying his website was completely down since 19:00 that day..bombarding us and complaining the performance of the system..etc. and asking us to bring up the site back ASAP…. It is in production and nearly 30000 customers are having accounts into that site…. We are having the maintenance contract with them..
“Seems like, my day started crappy…Hmm..”…but my thoughts got interrupted, as I heard, “third floor…” from the lift boy…
Given him a thankful look and got out from the elevator.
While walking, punched the reply to the latest message, “Just reached office, we will take a look and get back to you…” and hit ‘send’ as the security was opening the main door for me.
Before going to my office, had a glance at the relevant developer seat. Empty.
Switched on my workstation monitor and logged in. Searched for the production host in the huge list of saved putty sessions in multi tabbed PuTTY.
Found the entry and double clicked on it. “My bad….” The putty console gives message, “unable to use key file, the location, blah blah blah..” Not able to login into the production Linux!
Gone to the location, E:\ in my desktop, to check for the .ppk file. Boom.. There was no .ppk file there for the login auth.
It was good, any way because it made me know why I was not able to login. My hard disk was been replaced recently and forgot to take the backup of that .ppk file.

I didn’t have much time to fiddle with keygen tool to generate a new key and all, as it is production issue. So, called up my QA person who was working remotely due to maternity reasons.
She answered my call, ” looking at the site down emails…”
Made her interrupted, “OK. Please login into the production host…and see what’s happening…I’m not able to login….here…”
“OK..”
“Can you send me the .ppk file you have, in an email asap?”, I asked her, as I wanted to debug on my own because of the issue severity and priority…

Got the .ppk file in 2 minutes… Meanwhile, figured out (googled) how to drag a ppk file into a putty saved session for the auth purposes.
“Voila”… logged into the production host… Irony is, I had to figure out some other stuff before figuring out the actual problem.

Just before starting my investigation, I had a look at our internal chat messenger contact list to see my in-house developer was at desk. No, his icon was still offline.
OK, and in a matter 5 minutes, found out (using some networking and Linux commands) that some body (???!!!???) rebooted the production box at around 19:00 that day and as some services like tomcat, apache etc. were not started on system reboot.
And the resolutions were pretty quick and cake walk, because I made our guys to document all the necessary steps in our local redmine portal.
The next steps like informing the client and deducing the new task to add some init scripts, happened pretty fast.

The reason, why I’m posting this story is not like we have got a problem, found the root cause and giving the resolution.
But it is about how the persons behave on their loss at others, seeking help, in a helpless state. Seems like, we need to think like, if such problem happened to us, how we should feel and behave instead of deriving useless meanings. It should be productive.

I don’t know.

And in a different context – this is appraisals period. Any hung-up souls should REBOOT themselves to refine or rejuvenate their inner resources in order set the targets for the coming new year… Happy Ugaadi.

Getting the best

I remember making an FM radio based communication system during the second year of my engineering. I really liked it once I made it.

One of my classmates suggested the loud speaker section to be refined more, so I changed the loud speaker unit with proper impedance matching. Another classmate pointed out the coil which set the frequency of the radio was not properly working. So wound 6 turns of the coil tightly, side-by-side, on the cylinder, then slipped the wire off. Made the winding apart from each other so the whole coil was just under an inch long.  And mounted the ends of the wire on the circuit board keeping some clearance between the coil and the circuit board. It worked more better now.

Someone else suggested I should add another kind of tuning capacitor for much better reception.
Then I replaced it with the better one.

Our Professor for Electronics Circuits-2, who’s passing by then, seen what I was doing and recommended some design changes that greatly improved the audio circuit, making it strong enough for regular earphones or even a small speaker.
And my pet project caught so many eyes and it’s got nominated to the then coming seminar.

My intention is not to show off what I did. But my point is…if I was particularly sensitive to criticism, what would happen then?

I realized that no matter what we do, people will always criticize our work, whether they say so or not.
Forming judgments or pointing out faults is something most people do. Everyone gets criticized.
It’s a part of life. But gettting the best out of all is the most important thing in order to make a project a success.

Chai Wallah

“Kyaah Saab! Kabhi dikhaayi nahin detah aaj kal?”

“Arey kyaah bolun Karim bhai. Mera bacha ka school change kar diya. Isiliyeh mera office jaane ka direction bhi change ho gaya…”

“Phir bhi…Kabhi aate jaate karna saab…”

“Haan bhai..haan. Aap ki aur aap ki chai ke yaad aagayi..isseliye..aaj aap ko dekhne ka mann lagaa..”

“Shukriya Saab….”

We change our directions in life now and then. But some people and some places are not so easy to forget… What do you say?

Pains

And, its nearly one day ago, I got back from the dentist clinic…but…with one tooth less. Finally, my thinking like why I’ve been in having pains when chewing with this tooth and lately simply frequent extreme pain on it and around its area, are come an end.

You see, this particular molar had been torturing me for the past couple of months. I initially noticed it in the last summer, whenever I used to drink cold and chilled water due to summer heat. So i dismissed drinking cold water there after. The pains started getting more frequent and later on affecting other kinds of food as well. Consulted dentist and it was due to a decayed tooth.

Finally i was on the dentist bed, yesterday, for tooth extraction. My dentist arrived and gave me a local dental anesthesia to block the reception of pain in one region of the mouth at a time. Believe me, when he injected it using the dental syringe, the pain was ridiculously hell.

“Take a break for 5 minutes and let me know if the anesthetic senasation has reached…”, said the dentist while dialing his mobile phone.

Was getting an awkward sense inside my mouth due to that local anesthesia, minute by minute.. My dentist reached me and asked, ” How are you feeling? Shall i start extraction? But let me confirm the anesthesia is working or not…” and then he started banging on my teeth by grabbing his utensils. I just sounded ” aaww….” with pain.
” Cool..cool.. Seems like you need to wait for a few more minutes” and he was gone.

A few minutes later, he came in and injected at the same place using the dental syringe and said, ” are feeling any pain now?”

“Miracle! No sense of pain now…doctor..”

“Good…Let me start then..”

A couple of minutes later.. I was able to see the bad tooth lying in front of me, in a tray, looking all ashamed for its act..

Summary: We need to face or invite pains for short time in order to cure/solve pains or problems…

Intelligence or Wisdom

Sarathi: Hey Ganga. do you know the difference between Intelligence and Wisdom?
Ganga: Umm..Not so sure..Guess both are one and the same? or Intelligence could be how inteligent you could react to a problem spontaneously and wisdom could be like how you…..Oh, c’mon..i give up.. you tell me…your take?
Sarathi: Haha. Ganga, let me narrate a small incident before i tell the difference. There was a conversation between one father and his 10 year old son.
Father: Deepu. what do you wanna become when you grow up?
Deepu: i wanna become a great scientist…Wanna invent more and more useful things to the public. Wanna earn more money.. And you know, wanna build my own big and big house with a big lawn…so many rooms inside..separate study rooms for my kids, guests, different rooms depending on my mood, office rooms for me and my wife…a wide variety of cars for all of my family members……….(his imagination goes on like that..)
Father: Deepu..wait..wait.. But where are we, me and Mama in your story?
Deepu: How come you will be living with my family? It will be just me and my family, right? That’s what you are also doing….my grand pa and ma are not living with us…..
Sarathi: See Ganga. That Deepu has applied his intelligence to determine that his father and mother will not be living with him in his future story, because of his Dad’s experience. Deepu utilized whatever knowledge he has and applied practically. But here is the wisdom. He may or may not know why his Dad parents are not living with his Dad. Point here is – he doesnt have the maturity to determine or understand why his grand parents are away from them. That maturity itself is wisdom. We need to impart our kids to go to that maturity level..
Ganga: Hmm..Sarathi, i think, i could understand the difference now. For example, let’s say, one person is earning two hundred thousand a month and another person is earning just one hundred thousand a month. If the second person saves 20 K per month and if the first person saves just 10 K per month….I can say that first person is more intelligent than the second person…..but the second person is more wiser than the first person?
Sarathi: Fantastic, Ganga… That’s the thing…
The above conversation happened between me and my colony friend, during this weekend while going to a farm house…. food for thought?

MAARO – Kill the Thought: The Hindu news story

Would like to share a news that – a very good news story about MAARO – Kill the Thought got published in our popular daily newspaper, The Hindu…today..on 16th October..

http://www.thehindu.com/features/metroplus/a-silent-film-with-a-mission/article6503269.ece

Thanks a lot for contributors for their valuable time and money….. I believe i can finish this mission successful….

Wish me good luck!!

Just be careful

A slightly busy road. A person talking over mobile phone.

“ Gatlanae…nen choosta kada…fikar avvaddu…”

“nee paisalu yaadiki bovu….”

“gammuna vundu… aa… gatlane..”

Another person watching him talking over phone and glancing at his wrist watch now and then incessantly…

“..Aare…nae chebtunna kada… Damaag kharrab gaaleduga?….”

“ Daawat eppudisthav?…”

………….

………….

………….

The other person keeps on glancing at his watch and watching the person talking over phone.

Finally, the person talking over phone finished the conversation, kept the mobile in the pocket and was trying to kick his bike….

Then the other person reached him and urged him…”Hey…my mobile phone…give it to me..”

The bike person, “ Dammag karaabayyinda… naa mobile phone adugutunnav… Chal be chal..” and quickly started the bike and disappeared..

The other person was screaming and yelling…”my mobile….my mobile….” But no use. That bike person was out of his reach. This other person was telling to the crowd, “he asked…and wanted to make an urgent call..so..i gave him my mobile…But see what happened…he ….he…. I bought my phone recently….10000 …”

Helping the people in need might be dangerous. The other way around can also happen. So…just be careful….

Chiranjeevi Blood Bank

Chalo ek wallet khareed thein..(“Let’s go buy a wallet..)..And u know any nice leather stores here?

“yeah..i know one..um..it’s near Chiranjeevi Blood Bank, Punjagutta. i’ve gone there two yrs back..we’ll go n find it..”

xxxxxxxx

They searched around Panjagutta Circle, but dint find the place. During their search project, they inquired one pan shop person..he said Chiranjeevi Blood Bank was there previously in the immediate left galli (street) to his pan shop..but it was shifted to Jubillee Hills, a couple of months ago.

xxxxxxxx

Oh…shit..then let’s go Jubille Hills…

“Okay..then…let’s move to Jubille Hills …… and hey.. wait a minute.. we’re not here to find Chiranjeevi Blood Bank.. And it doesn’t mean that the leather stores too shifted to Jubille Hills ..let’s check on dis left galli first…”

Moral of the story??  We often do several searches intended for a particular purpose but we may get side tracked by leaving the actual purpose aside. So be balanced and focused at the original intention though there is a new purposeful discovery due to the side tracked elements….. i dont know…

Note: Well, this post is taken from my first blog called DD, some time during the year 2006 based on a practical experience. Got to remember this incident cause i was on chat with that friend this morning and felt some nostalgia. the comments below posted are taken from my old blog.

Went to Guntur in 70′s, landed there at 7 morning. Had to find a hotel to stay. All full near the railway station, no rooms,

took a cycle ric, told the guy I want a room, Chaloo saab.

10 in the morning I was still on the road. No rooms anywhere.

We’ll try one last place. He took me in to gulies
and gulies, finally found one. Roof top asbestos sheet roof in the height of summer in Guntur, never mind, took the room paid the ric.

Wandered around the terrace, found an adjoining movie theatre, Shankarabharnam running there.
11 in the morning, feeling hungry, lets have breakfast, dumped the bag took ten rupees, locked the room gave the keys at the reception and set out looking for a veg restaurant. Couldn’t find one nearby, went walking further up. Located one after one hour,

it was lunch time. OKKAY ! ordered something. While I was eating something struck me like a thunderbolt.

    WHERE AM I STAYING ?
Forgot the name of the place I took a room, never paid attention in the first place. I stopped eating, King of morons I was.

Then I remembered it is right next to a theatre where Shankarabharanam was running, will not be difficult to locate it, I patted my own back for my smart observation.

Finished my breakfast, paid the bill,
asked the guy at the counter where Shankarabharanam movie is running.

    Whichee thatter ? he asked

Shankarabharnam which theatre ? what do you mean which theatre ?

Whichee thatter ? he asked me again
    I was getting irritated,

Shankarabharanam SHANKARA BHARANAM the movie where is it running ??
Whichee thatter ? He was getting pissed with me too.

    Where Shankarabharanam is running ?

Then he yelled at me ‘ Shankarabharanam is running in eight different theatres in Guntur’.

    OH SHIT

I came out, completely lost, in a town I hardly know, just 2 rupees in my pocket. All the money was in my hotel room.

and I don’t know where I am staying.

OK Lets take a ric again and go to all the eight bloody theatres to see where I am staying.
What if I don’t find it ? How will I pay the ric ? I’ll get bashed up.

Thought of a plan I asked some one the names of the theatres got some but no use
Decided to walk in each direction and come back to the same spot and go in different direction.
I was very angry. How can i be such a moron ?

When ever I asked for direction for the theatre
they all were giving me funny looks. No more seeking directions, as planned walked in each direction
finally found the theatre and my lodge at 7 in the evening, i was on the road for the whole day.
Looking for a place to stay and searching for the place where i was staying
    Now i was hungry again.
Oh dear no more of that
I was tired. went to sleep instead.

    Hi Ganga
Yah every now and then we loose focus.
The story of Rauf above reminds me of a story named ‘Dusk’ by Saki where the narrator was duped by a young man. All that ends well is well.
    Good post.

    The template is COOL! :)

Loved the two stories- yours as well as Rauf’s! Happens to me all the time, but then I never try to reach the place (giving up after 1st attempt), just go where the raods lead me.

But guess what? Soon enough (too soon) I land up where I supposed to reach :)

Distantly closer

Gan@MunnarTopStationSome places at distant are closer than than they appear.

If you are going across town, you may be very specific, for example, ‘Street no:12, Ashok Nagar, nearer to Milk booth’

On a different story, if you go on vacation, you tell people, “I’m going to Delhi” or “I’m going to Bangkok”, but you will not tell like “we’re going to 8th street Kalkaji” And if you’re going even farther than that, you skip the city and country altogether and just say, “we’re going to Europe.”

But if you go on vacation and tell people, “We’re going to Kerala” – you may receive a response from them like ” Oh.. to Munnar?”

So, I believe some places like Munnar are just around the corner but not on another planet…. Guess same theory applies to some people as well….
